Mission Statement

Our work at the Trillium Foundation for Education and Sustainability is guided by three commitments: to each learner as an individual, as a member of families and communities, and to the Earth.

Commitment to Individual Learners:
We believe that children's natural curiosity and desire to participate in their communities should guide their learning. In order to encourage this, we use engaging and authentic approaches such as experiential learning, project-based learning, interdisciplinary studies, outdoor education, and a high level of student voice in decision-making. We also believe that every individual possesses many strengths and that each strength is essential to our community. Our school supports all types of growth and development, including academic, physical, emotional, social, and spiritual. Multiage classrooms, small class sizes, non-violent communication, and positive discipline are also key elements of our learning environment.

Commitment to Families and Communities:
We acknowledge that every learner is a member of families and multiple communities. On the family level, we understand the importance of family in each child's development, and encourage a high level of family participation in learning. On the community level, we stress the interdependence of all living things and incorporate service to community into our curriculum. We also emphasize the value of diversity and of appreciating our differences.

Commitment to the Earth:
We believe that environmental sustainability is one of our greatest obligations. We model greater harmony with the earth through our green facility, curriculum, and daily practices and policies. We encourage our students to see the world through a green lens, fostering connections between their lives and the natural world around them. Outdoor education, a student-run organic garden, Earth-friendly cleaning practices, and a sustainable cafeteria, offering organic and vegan alternatives are key elements in exemplifying this commitment to the Earth.
